Original title: Panoplia evangelica, sive de verbo Dei evangelico libri quinque A five-book Latin Catholic controversial treatise answering the Reformation principle of Scripture alone. Lindanus divides the Word of God into a written part and an unwritten part handed down by the apostles, and makes apostolic tradition the rule by which both doctrines and the canon of Scripture are tested. Book I defines the evangelical Word. Book II assembles a century-by-century catalogue of patristic and conciliar witnesses. Book III treats the canon, the obscurity of Scripture, grace, merit, justification and the cult of the saints. Book IV covers the sacraments, including baptism, confirmation, penance, orders, Roman primacy, marriage and extreme unction, together with sacramentals and a graded classification of traditions. Book V refutes Brenz, Calvin and the Württemberg Confession and ends with a submission to Pope Paul IV. The work is dedicated to Philip II from Leeuwarden, 1 July 1559, and was printed at Cologne by Maternus Cholinus. Its Eucharistic part, defending the sacrifice of the Mass and communion under one kind, was issued separately in 1560 as Pars altera. Throughout, the treatise draws on Greek philology, canon law and local Netherlandish observances, such as the Frisian chalice tubes at Bolsward. 👉 Read our introductory primer, full report, and finding guide here 📜 View the original source file This text was transcribed and translated as part of the ExLatinis project—an effort by Leo to make English translations of every published text in Latin in early modern Europe (between 1450 and 1750) available to the public for free online.
