Document excerpt
Richmond Jany 11 1854 Dear Sir You wrote me some time ago that after I should deliver the plaster that was left on the way, that you would abide the dicision of any disinterested man. The plaster was delivered some time in the latter part of the fall, and I left word at Mr. R L. Brown & Co's that whatever was right I wanted done. Since that time Mr. Edwin W. Thacker who ran my boat after my removal down here informed me that he met with you at Messrs John Jones & Co's and that you told him that was willing to pay me my freight after deducting for the plaster that was short, which I learn was about 1 1/2 tons. You will please have the matter righted & send me whatever me be coming to me. I am in business here for other men and cannot go to New Market to attend to matters there & this is the reason why it has lain so long unsettled. I know you are willing to do what is right & so I leave the matter with you, & whatever you may do will be satisfactory to me Should you write please direct your letter to the Care of Messrs Taliaferro & Bro. Most Respectfully yours &c. Chas W Gruber I have sold my interest in the boat to Mr. Mayo Cabell who will continue to run it from Yxe River
