Original title: V. Cl. Marci Zuerii Boxhornii Varii tractatus politici, quorum seriem index tractatuum, operi praefixus, indigitat A posthumous collection of Boxhorn's Latin academic political writings, published at Amsterdam by Caspar Commelin, who signed a dedication to Henricus Heidanus, Carolus Heidanus and Gerardus Mastrichtius. Much of the material originated in Boxhorn's teaching at Leiden in the early 1640s, and several parts had appeared earlier in separate or anonymous editions. The volume contains the Institutiones politicae, a systematic textbook in numbered paragraphs that defines politics, the commonwealth, majestas, consent, the jus dominationis, laws, religion, treaties, war, the forms of rule and resistance to tyranny. It also contains the Disquisitiones politicae, ancient and recent historical cases set out as Casus, Sententiae, Decretum, Eventus and Judicium and distilled into political maxims. These are followed by the Dissertationes politicae de regio Romanorum imperio, on the Roman kings, the Republic, Caesar and Augustus, and by shorter dissertations on succession and primogeniture, election, punishment (De poenis), the first resources of commonwealths, amnesty (De amnestia) and laws (De legibus). The volume concludes with a description of the Batavian (Dutch) Republic and its States. 👉 Read our introductory primer, full report, and finding guide here 📜 View the original source file This text was transcribed and translated as part of the ExLatinis project—an effort by Leo to make English translations of every published text in Latin in early modern Europe (between 1450 and 1750) available to the public for free online.

Quod si institutum meum, (quæ res mihi minime dubia est) à vobis laudetur, vestra benevolentia me adhortabitur ad plures insignes imposterum scriptores typo mandandos.
