Original title: Theologiae speculativae scholasticis praelectionibus et exercitiis accommodatae libri IV, partibus Summae D. Thomae respondentes A Latin printed course of scholastic, speculative theology in four books, arranged to correspond to the parts of Thomas Aquinas's Summa theologiae and designed for lectures and disputation exercises at the Jesuit university of Ingolstadt. Organised in numbered controversies, it disputes selected positions of recent theologians while defending received Catholic doctrine. Book I treats God's existence and attributes, foreknowledge and middle knowledge, the divine will, predestination, the Trinity, and the angels. Book II covers human acts, freedom, conscience and probable opinion, sin, original sin, grace, and merit. Book III treats faith, hope, and charity. Book IV covers the Incarnation and satisfaction, the sacraments in general, the Eucharist, and penance. The work closes with an alphabetical index of matters. Its doctrinal basis is Molinist, resting on middle knowledge and liberty of indifference, and it is set against Thomist physical predetermination and Jansenism. It defends acting on a probable opinion, including against the canonist Prospero Fagnani, and frequently frames theological questions in juridical terms. It was printed at Ingolstadt by Johann Simon Knab in 1670. A further Ingolstadt printing of 1678 by Johann Philipp Zinck has an engraved title dated 1670 and adds a separately paginated Vindiciae attributed to the Jesuit Jakob Illsung. 👉 Read our introductory primer, full report, and finding guide here 📜 View the original source file This text was transcribed and translated as part of the ExLatinis project—an effort by Leo to make English translations of every published text in Latin in early modern Europe (between 1450 and 1750) available to the public for free online.
