Document notes

Original title: Ioannis Meursii Criticus Arnobianus tributus in libros septem. Item Hypocriticus Minutianus et Excerpta MS. Regii Parisiensis A Latin work of philological criticism printed at Leiden by Ludovicus Elzevirius (title page reads 'Editio altera, & melior'). It consists of critical notes, not an edition or translation, on the seven books Adversus nationes of the North African apologist Arnobius of Sicca, arranged in seven books to mirror Arnobius's own division. The notes propose emendations, defend rare and archaic readings against normalizing corrections by copyists and earlier editors such as Gelenius, identify marginal glosses and misread abbreviations that entered the text, and openly mark unresolved cruxes. Bound with it are a shorter Hypocriticus Minutianus, notes on the Octavius of Minucius Felix (with a dedication to the author's father), and an appendix of excerpts from the Paris royal manuscript, whose readings reached Meursius through a collation shared by Joseph Scaliger. The volume also includes a dedication, a preface to the reader, prolegomena on the lives of Arnobius and Minucius, commendatory verses, and a closing admonition urging caution in uncertain matters. 👉 Read our introductory primer, full report, and finding guide here 📜 View the original source file This text was transcribed and translated as part of the ExLatinis project—an effort by Leo to make English translations of every published text in Latin in early modern Europe (between 1450 and 1750) available to the public for free online.
