Original title: Historiarum totius mundi epitome A Latin universal history carrying the world's story from the first origin of things to 1630, with a continuation by the author to 1633 and, in later printed matter, enlargement through the peace concluded between England and the Dutch in 1667. Arranged in fourteen books with appendices and a continuation, set in double columns with printed marginal citations drawn from a stated pool of more than six hundred sacred and profane authorities and closed by alphabetical indexes, it runs a double marginal reckoning of Anno Mundi beside Anno Christi, supplemented by Olympiads, years from the founding of the city, the epoch of the Greek empire and indictions. Its contents move from Creation, the Flood and the patriarchs through Israelite and ancient history, the Persian, Greek and Hellenistic monarchies, Rome, the successive ages of the Church, the medieval Empire paired annalistically with the Ottoman sultans, the councils of Constance and Basel, the Reformation and the calendar reform, and on into the Thirty Years' War, the Peace of Westphalia, the Fronde and the campaigns of Dunbar and Worcester.
