First, get the names straight
Most of the confusion around Kurrent is terminological, and it costs people weeks. Four distinctions are worth fixing before you look at a single letter.
Kurrent is the family; Sütterlin is one member of it
Kurrentschrift (or deutsche Kurrentschrift) refers broadly to German cursive in the Gothic/neogothic tradition. Sütterlin is a specific, comparatively late standardized school hand — generally straighter and more upright than older Kurrent — introduced in the early twentieth century as a teaching reform. Calling every old German hand "Sütterlin" is like calling every English hand "copperplate." Kurrent is handwriting; Fraktur is type
Fraktur and the related Schwabacher are printed blackletter typefaces. They are not "printed Kurrent," and the two problems are technically distinct: reading Fraktur is a typography problem, reading Kurrent is a paleography problem. If your record is a printed book or newspaper, you are working with the first; if it is a register entry in ink, the second.
Deutsche Schrift and lateinische Schrift are two hands, not two languages
Many German writers learned both: the German hand for German text, and a Latin-style cursive resembling what English speakers write today. A single document can switch between them mid-line — German words in the German hand, then a Latin phrase, a foreign place name, or a surname in the Latin hand. That switch is a feature you can use: when a word suddenly looks legible, it is often a proper noun. Do not mistake the presence of lateinische Schrift for the presence of the Latin language.
Script alone is weak evidence for dating or localizing a document
The University of Zürich's Ad fontes tutorial on script history cautions plainly that nomenclature is not uniform and that dating or, above all, localizing a hand from its appearance alone is difficult and usually requires specialist knowledge in combination with other evidence. Use the archival context — the series, the volume, the register's own dates — before you use the letterforms.

The confusable letters, in the order they will trip you
These are the recurring failures, and they are worth memorizing because they account for a disproportionate share of misreadings.
e, n, u — the core problem
Lowercase e in Kurrent is two narrow short strokes, not a loop, and at speed it is easily mistaken for n or u. The discriminators: n is straighter and comes to a point; u is n plus an upper loop or bow (the U-Bogen) drawn above it. BYU's letterform notes make the u/n relationship explicit — they are the same base stroke, distinguished by that loop. When a scribe omits the loop, the word itself has to decide the reading for you.
m and mm
Lowercase m is angular, and a horizontal bar over the letter can indicate doubling — mm. Do not read that bar as a stray pen mark or a nasal abbreviation without checking whether the word wants a double m.
h, f, and the long ſ
These three overlap visually more than any other group. h has more pronounced loops; f has a cross-stroke that the long ſ does not. When you cannot resolve one of these, the cross-stroke is usually the fastest test.
The two lowercase s forms
Kurrent has an initial/medial long ſ, tall and ascending, and a final round form that looks rather like a numeral 6. Getting this distinction into your eye immediately improves your reading of word boundaries, because the round s effectively signals the end of a word or syllable. Separately, ß is its own character — a combination of long s and z — and it never begins a word.
c, and the ch/ck/sch clusters
Lowercase c looks much like a Kurrent i without its dot, which is why it is so easy to lose. In practice you will mostly meet it inside ch, ck, and sch, so learn those three clusters as shapes rather than as sequences of individual letters.
r
Kurrent r can pass for e or n. FamilySearch's German Genealogical Word List records the transcription errors that recur most often in practice — n read as u or w, e read as n or r, r read as s. If your reading produces a word that is not quite German, run it back through those substitutions before you conclude the scribe made a mistake.
k and t
k carries an upper loop with a cross-stroke. t is hardest to identify when a preceding d or s connects to it above the baseline, dissolving the letter boundary.
Capitals
Here the honest answer is that there is no universal prose rule. Capital B, V, and L in particular are frequently mistaken for one another, and the shape a given writer uses may not match any chart. The only reliable method is comparison within the same document: find the same capital in a word you already know — a place name in the heading, the scribe's own signature, a month name — and use that as your local exemplar. Capitals reward page-specific evidence and punish general rules.

A method for working through a page
Letter charts alone do not get a page read. A repeatable sequence does. What follows is the human-led, evidence-preserving order that institutional teaching sources converge on; BYU's basic handwriting techniques module is a good companion to it.
1. Establish the frame before you read a word
What language is the document in? Which hand — German, Latin-style, or both? What genre: baptismal register, will, land record, letter? Roughly what date, and from which archive and institution? Parish registers in particular can be in German or Latin depending on period and confession, so the language question is not rhetorical.
2. Anchor the page on what is predictable
Names, dates, places, formulaic phrases, verbs, occupations, witnesses, signatures. Register entries are formulaic by design; once you have read one entry properly, the next twenty share most of its vocabulary. Read the easy, repeated material first and let it teach you the hand.
3. Build a local alphabet key
Take the words you have securely read and harvest their letterforms into your own key for this writer. This is the step people skip, and it is the step that matters. A chart tells you what Kurrent e generally looks like; your key tells you what this scribe's e looks like when it follows an r.
4. Read words, not glyphs
Kurrent is connected writing, and isolated strokes are often genuinely ambiguous. Context resolves what the letterform cannot. If a word will not come, read the whole line aloud, or look for the same word elsewhere in the volume where the pen was steadier.
5. Compare uncertain letters against the same writer elsewhere
Not against a chart. Against the same hand, in a word you already know.
6. Handle abbreviations as paleography, not as noise
Ad fontes distinguishes the standard types on its abbreviations module: suspensions cut the ending, contractions omit internal letters, and special marks and superscripts stand for omitted syllables. A nasal bar commonly indicates an m or n; a high er-hook has several possible expansions, so mark it rather than guessing.
7. Transcribe diplomatically and record uncertainty
Ad fontes's transcription rules recommend letter-for-letter reproduction of the text. Expand only abbreviations you are confident about, and mark editorial expansions, gaps, uncertain readings, later additions, diacritic decisions, and line breaks. If you want a modernized or translated reading, keep it as a separate layer.
That last point carries real genealogical weight. Modernizing spelling as you go destroys exactly the evidence you need: name variants, dialect spellings, place-name forms, the scribe's habits. Where machine transcription actually stands on Kurrent
At some point — usually around the fiftieth page of a register — the question becomes whether a machine can take the first pass. The answer depends heavily on what kind of machine.
Specialist handwritten text recognition for Kurrent is capable when the model's training coverage fits the hand in front of it. Hodel's study of general models for German Kurrent tested against 2,426 lines of Swiss Federal Council minutes from 1848–1903, with French, Italian, and Latin-script material removed. Mean character error rates ranged from 3.43% for the best model to 5.90% for a Transkribus German-Kurrent model and 9.15% for another, with worst-case figures running considerably higher. Those are character error rates, not word accuracy, and the same paper's in-domain validation figures were lower still — which is precisely the finding worth internalizing: performance on hands a model has seen tells you little about performance on hands it has not.
General-purpose chatbots are a different and riskier proposition. The reward is specific and worth the effort: a baptismal entry read correctly gives you a mother's maiden name, two witnesses, and a village, in the spelling the parish actually used. Read it faithfully, mark what you could not resolve, and leave the original visible. The next researcher to open that register — possibly you, five years on, with better eyes for the hand — will be able to check your work, which is the only real test of a transcription.
